Digital Citizenship – Grade 5 students use technology safely and responsibly

16/10/2024

Should we: Share a classmate’s photos, personal information, or poor academic results online; Spread and share inaccurate or unverified information; Or write an article and use a cartoon character as the author instead of our real identity?

These were the scenario-based questions discussed in the Computer Science lesson for Grade 5 students, focusing on the topic of "Digital Citizenship." The lesson not only helped students identify appropriate and inappropriate behaviors in the online environment but also instilled ethical values and a sense of responsibility in using information technology.

The lesson introduced students to the concept of digital citizenship, along with advanced related terms such as anonymity, catfishing (online deception using a fake identity), hackers, and computer viruses. Additionally, students learned about age restrictions for specific social media platforms and online games.

Moreover, they explored how to distinguish between positive and negative digital citizenship behaviors, thereby fostering a more responsible approach to technology and online services. Teachers also emphasized the importance of controlling and protecting personal information when using digital devices and the Internet.

Beyond attentively absorbing meaningful information, students engaged in fun reinforcement activities through games like Blocket, Quizizz, and Liveworksheets exercises. Correct answers and perfect scores on their assignments were a testament to a valuable, engaging, and successful lesson.

Reinforcement activities through games provided an engaging learning experience.

Through the "Digital Citizenship" lesson, the school believes that students have gained a foundational understanding of how to use technology safely, effectively, and responsibly. This is an essential step in preparing them to navigate the digital era with confidence.
