Good Puppet Show - Teaching children how to protect themselves through puppet stories

02/10/2024

"I really hate it when he touches me, but I don’t know what to do," said a puppet character named "Bé Hoa" with frustration to another puppet playing the role of a teacher. Hearing the story, the teacher reassured Hoa and told her, "When someone touches your body, you should shout loudly: 'I don’t like it, don’t do that!' and quickly run to find an adult."

This was one of the scenarios in the Good Puppet Show, a child protection puppet theater program jointly organized by Greenfield School and Good Neighbors Vietnam (GNI) for first-grade students. The program aims to equip young children with essential skills to protect themselves from the risks of abuse or abduction.

The Good Puppet Show is an annual initiative at Greenfield School designed specifically for first graders.

As an international non-governmental organization (NGO) focused on community development and child protection in Vietnam, GNI has delivered hundreds of puppet performances to more than 73,000 students across 198 schools nationwide over the past decade. Through puppet storytelling—a format familiar and engaging for young children—the program conveys essential lessons in a creative, visual, and interactive manner, capturing students' attention and curiosity.

As the green curtain rises, colorful puppets come to life, animated by skilled performers who synchronize their voices and movements on stage. The excitement and fascination on the faces of the first graders are evident. Through the play, they learn to name important body parts scientifically using the "swimsuit rule," practice the "three-step self-protection method" to handle dangerous situations, and role-play scenarios involving strangers or acquaintances inviting them out.

The students watched the puppet shows with excitement and enthusiasm.

With its clear, relatable, and memorable approach, the school believes that today’s Good Puppet Show has provided young students with valuable experiences. These lessons will help them develop awareness, reflexes, and appropriate responses to safeguard themselves in unsafe situations.
