Grade 10 students explore the essence of traditional theatrical arts

13/11/2024

Chèo is a long-standing traditional theatrical art form that holds a significant place in the cultural and spiritual life of the Vietnamese people. With the desire to help students gain a deeper understanding of this art, on November 12th, Grade 10 students had the opportunity to visit the Hanoi Chèo Theater, engage in discussions, and enjoy captivating Chèo performances.

At the Hanoi Chèo Theater, the students had the chance to enjoy an outstanding Chèo performance, immersing themselves in the unique melodies and expressive storytelling of this traditional art form.

Here, the students had the opportunity to enjoy the Chèo play Tấm Cám. With its vivid portrayal of character emotions, witty and engaging performances, and dynamic pacing, the play not only felt familiar to the students but also conveyed profound humanitarian messages, encouraging kindness and virtue in life. Especially exciting was the chance to learn and practice some traditional Chèo melodies from Tấm Cám under the guidance of experienced Chèo artists.

Watching the Tấm Cám Chèo performance, the students couldn’t hide their excitement at the witty and engaging acting.

As a familiar piece from their Literature lessons, the students quickly immersed themselves in the performance and confidently reenacted selected scenes from Tấm Cám on stage. This experience also served as a practical review of their Grade 10 Literature module, Traditional Theatrical Performances. Like true artists, the students impressed their teachers, peers, and even the Chèo performers with their confidence and emotionally rich delivery of lines.

Like true artists, the students confidently performed selected scenes from Tấm Cám on stage.

Interwoven with performances and practice sessions, the students had the opportunity to interact with experienced Chèo artists. Some have dedicated over 30 years to this art form, overcoming numerous challenges while continuously striving to preserve and convey the cultural heritage and identity of Vietnam.

The exchange with the Chèo artists left a deep impression and special emotions on the students.

The trip may have ended, but it left a lasting impression on the students with unforgettable experiences as they immersed themselves in this traditional Vietnamese folk art. By connecting textbook knowledge with hands-on experiences, the trip deepened their understanding of cultural heritage, fostering a greater awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting traditional arts.
