Teachers are not only instructors, but also liberators

07/12/2022

Belonging to the first generation of Gen Z, the 9X teacher Ngo Quang Loc (Physical Education Teacher, Physical Education Department, Greenfield School) is not only a teacher but also a great friend, a reliable older brother in the eyes of his students. The young teacher's happiness is to become a liberator, accompanying students to discover their own strengths and passions.

A strong passion for the orange ball

Champion of the c500 Open Basketball Tournament VII in 2020, Champion of the 3×3 MF2 Club Open Basketball Tournament in 2020, Best Player of the c500 Open Basketball Tournament VII in 2020, Champion of the 3×3 Hai Phong Open Basketball Tournament in 2021, Top 20 best players of the All-star Hanoi Basketball League 2019… These are just some of the "terrible achievements" in the admirable achievement list of Mr. Ngo Quang Loc (Physical Education Teacher, Physical Education Department, Greenfield School).

Passionate about basketball since his high school years, for Quang Loc, basketball is the sport that helped him grow physically, mentally, and also in his current career path. Before coming to the teaching profession, he was a member of the Hanoi Hidden Dragon non-professional basketball team and participated in many major competitions in the city and nationally.

With his skillful playing technique and deep understanding of tactics on the court, Quang Loc cherished the idea of becoming a basketball coach. After graduating, Quang Loc chose to become a Physical Education Teacher. Deep inside this decision is the burning passion that Quang Loc has for the orange ball and the desire to pass that flame of passion on to the younger generations.

"For me, choosing to be a teacher is like a destiny. Currently, I am happy with this decision. As a teacher, I can both satisfy my passion for basketball training, work as a coach, and lead students. Becoming a teacher is like hitting three targets with one arrow." - The 9X teacher shared.

Teachers are not only instructors, but also liberators

Becoming a good teacher, making students change their views on Physical Education in general and basketball in particular is Quang Loc's long-term goal.

"Basketball is a team sport, so if you want to compete for high achievements, you cannot rely on luck. Players must have knowledge of basketball, about tactics, techniques, about people, about coordination to be able to compete well. More than that, through a tournament, winning or losing is not as important as students seeing changes in their physical, psychological, and personality, thereby having positive and comprehensive changes. That is the big goal that I always aim for."

As a young teacher, Quang Loc believes that Gen Z teachers have many strengths. "When interacting with and teaching students of the same generation, I don't think of myself as a "teacher", but always consider myself a friend, an older brother, supporting and guiding them. Openness and rapid adaptation are the plus points of the Z generation students. They are always ready to accept changes in the curriculum and teaching methods of teachers.

I am happy to have inspired many students at Greenfield School with basketball. For me, teachers are not only instructors, but also liberators. Many students have come to me to share their dream of becoming professional basketball players. But before starting, I always advise them to consider and clearly define whether it is a hobby or a passion. Passion is different from liking in that you will consider it as a source of energy to empower yourself. In other words, basketball is like a friend.

At Greenfield School, students have the advantage of being exposed to and learning basketball according to the Junior NBA curriculum. They also have the opportunity to experience a variety of sports such as football, archery, golf, swimming... I always want to bring more highly experiential lessons, encouraging students to discover their strengths and passions, thereby helping them feel like, love, and find it necessary with this subject."

Reliable "big brother" of students

Belonging to the first generation of young, comfortable, and "trendy" Gen Z, Quang Loc is also a great friend, an older brother to whom many students come to share their difficulties on the journey to adulthood. With the advantage of understanding the psychology of students, the 9X teacher has helped many students understand why they need to study, overcome exam pressure, or positively solve problems arising in their studies and lives.

"I remember having a very special student. He used to be very hot-tempered and easily lost control, but also very easy to cry and feel hurt when his friends reacted. When it was time for Physical Education, I had to sit down, slowly calm his emotions, talk and share with him. Through talking with me, he has now made positive changes: calm, gentle, and self-controlled.

My students are only 15-16 years old - an age when they are preparing to become adults, so they like to assert themselves and their ego is very high. So I always want to accompany and be close to them to chat and confide. However, being close but still maintaining the seriousness of a teacher is also a big challenge for me and I am still trying and striving to approach the image of an ideal teacher in the eyes of students."

Thank you, Mr. Quang Loc - a talented young teacher of the Physical Education Department, who has been devoting his heart to educating students. Hopefully, with his youth, talent, and enthusiasm, he will continue to train more and more generations of students with a healthy and happy body - mind - intellect.
