The colors of Vietnam’s enthic cultures through the lens of Greenfield School students

16/11/2024

The traditional cultural values created by ethnic communities throughout their survival and development are the key elements that shape their unique identity. Culture serves as a "distinct identifier" or the "genetic code" of a nation, affirming its essence and preserving its core values amidst the process of global integration.

With the desire to provide students with opportunities to deeply understand, retain knowledge, and experience the unique cultural characteristics of Vietnam’s ethnic groups, the Grand Finale of the "Colors of Vietnam’s Ethnic Cultures" event—a History subject experiential activity—took place vibrantly on November 15th. The event welcomed enthusiastic participation from 10th-grade students. After two months of preparation, four classes, each representing a different ethnic region (Northwest, Northeast, Central Highlands, and Southern Vietnam), divided into three specific roles: exhibition, experience, and performance. Together, they created a colorful cultural festival filled with learning and excitement.

The experiential activity took place with great excitement from the students.

The program opened with fascinating performances showcasing the distinctive characteristics of various ethnic groups. Dressed in elaborate and vibrant traditional costumes, students confidently performed duet songs and folk dances from ethnic groups such as the Dao, Tày, Ê Đê, H’mông, and Chăm. A particularly heartwarming moment was when teachers and students joined together in the traditional bamboo pole dance, creating a joyful and meaningful atmosphere of unity.

Alongside the stage performances, the exhibition and experience spaces offered an engaging hands-on cultural journey. Students meticulously prepared posters and artifacts that introduced the unique cultural aspects and cuisines of different ethnic groups. Beyond just learning, they had the chance to try on traditional costumes, play folk games, dye five-colored sticky rice, and most excitingly—discover and enjoy signature ethnic dishes such as roasted pork, bánh gio (ash cake), black jelly, and five-colored sticky rice.

The students eagerly participated in trying on traditional ethnic costumes.

Playing the role of a judge at the event, Ms. Pham Thi Huong, Deputy Head of the Management Board of Lang Son Geopark, was deeply impressed by the students' knowledge and thoughtful preparation. With years of experience in promoting, preserving, and developing Vietnam’s cultural heritage, as well as contributing to Lạng Sơn Geopark’s UNESCO recognition efforts, she shared valuable insights and heartfelt appreciation for the students’ efforts.

"I am truly amazed by this event. From the preparation to the execution, everything reflects the dedication and meticulous effort of both teachers and students. The confidence, energy, and creativity of Greenfield School students are remarkable—they performed like true artists on stage. I believe that through this program, Vietnam’s traditional cultural values will become more accessible to students, fostering stronger connections and contributing to the unity and strength of our nation," she shared.
