Banh Gia Huy Secures a Spot at the 2025 Chess World Cup
Outstanding Achievement
International Master, Elo rating 2,440
Champion of the 2024 National Standard Chess Championship
Secured a ticket to participate in the 2025 FIDE Chess World Cup
At the age of 16, Banh Gia Huy (student of Class 11C1, Cambridge International Program, Greenfield School Ecopark Campus) has made a special milestone by being named by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) on the list of participants for the 2025 FIDE Chess World Cup. As of now, he is the youngest Vietnamese representative to attend this prestigious tournament.
Gia Huy shared: "I was very surprised to be selected to participate in the 2025 Chess World Cup. Before this, Vietnamese chess only had one allocated spot, which belonged to player Le Quang Liem. However, some top world players decided not to participate, so Le Quang Liem was promoted to the spot reserved for the top players in the FIDE rankings. Thanks to that, the Olympiad spot for Vietnamese chess became vacant, and I was lucky enough to be chosen."

For the Greenfield School community in particular and the Vietnamese chess community in general, Banh Gia Huy is not an unfamiliar name. He won the 2024 National Standard Chess Championship; he is one of the youngest players ever called up to the national team, competing at the 2024 Olympiad alongside his seniors Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Tran Tuan Minh, and Le Tuan Minh, where the team finished 25th overall.
The 2025 Chess World Cup will take place from October 31 to November 27 in Goa, India. This major event in the world of chess brings together 206 players competing in a knockout format, with a total prize fund of up to 2 million USD. This is also an opportunity for players to compete for three spots in the Candidates Tournament—the event that decides the challenger for the World Championship title.
Currently, Banh Gia Huy has an Elo rating of 2,440, ranking 7th nationwide, and has achieved 1 Grandmaster (GM) norm. His goal is to conquer the remaining two norms and reach the Elo milestone of 2,500 to be officially awarded the title of International Grandmaster. Participating in the 2025 Chess World Cup is a valuable opportunity for him to compete against top players, accumulate experience, and affirm his position on the world map.
