Fueled by a passion for semiconductors, Nguyen Phan Hoang secures full scholarship to top Taiwan University
Outstanding Achievement
100% tuition scholarship from National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan
Nguyen Phan Hoang, a student in class 12G1 of the Global Citizen Bilingual Program, recently received an acceptance letter from National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan. Ranked 2nd in Taiwan, 39th in Asia, and 210th globally according to the 2025 QS World University Rankings, NTHU is a powerhouse for technology. Along with admission, Hoang was awarded a 100% tuition scholarship for four years of study in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) program.
A Vision to Lead the Industry
Hoang’s journey began in 10th grade when he identified study abroad as the key to his academic growth. Driven by a fascination with science and semiconductor technology, he chose a challenging path to define his identity and create social impact rather than following the crowd.
His resolve was further strengthened during a charity trip with the Greenfield Volunteer Club (GVC). Witnessing the technological gap faced by children in remote mountainous areas, Hoang became determined to use his future expertise to bridge that divide.
In the era of Industry 4.0 and the AI boom, global demand for semiconductors is skyrocketing—from telecommunications and smart EVs to AI and IoT. While global giants like the US, China, and South Korea prioritize long-term human resources in this field, Vietnam is emerging as a promising semiconductor hub. For Hoang, pursuing this field means entering the "core" of the technological world.
This vision led him to Taiwan, the world’s "semiconductor capital." The combination of high-quality education, reasonable living costs, and cultural proximity made Taiwan the perfect destination for his undergraduate studies.

From Ambition to Action
Hoang didn't wait for application portals to open to start his preparation. He proactively researched admission criteria to build a profile that aligned perfectly with the university's requirements.
Understanding that academic excellence is the baseline, Hoang maintained a stellar 9.5 GPA throughout 10th and 11th grade. He also achieved an 8.0 IELTS score on his first attempt. "GPA is not just a testament to your knowledge base; it reflects discipline and a serious commitment to your academic path," Hoang shared.
Beyond numbers, Hoang emphasized the importance of the personal statement. "The essay helps the Admissions Committee visualize who you are and why you deserve the opportunity. A persuasive essay reflects your values, passion, and vision."
Hoang submitted two focused essays: one regarding his motivation for the major and the university, and another outlining a clear four-year study plan. His mantra was to "write right and write smart," highlighting his unique qualities and future goals.
To round out his profile, Hoang engaged in extensive extracurricular activities, demonstrating leadership and creativity. His resume includes: RMIT’s Future Tech Camp participant, Vice Head of Events for the Greenfield Volunteer Club, Member of the Greenfield Student Council, Organizer of community and art projects such as "Nang" (Sunshine) charity, "Petflix" outdoor cinema, and the "Luneur 25: Amoure" prom, Member of "Fix My Food," an initiative promoting healthy food environments for children.
During the interview round, Hoang showcased his technical prowess. In addition to general questions, the committee tested his knowledge of Physics and Mathematics. Despite facing challenging, unexpected questions, he remained composed and confident. This resilience eventually turned his efforts into the "sweet fruit" of a full scholarship.
Reflecting on his journey, the NTHU scholarship recipient offers a simple piece of advice to fellow students: "Opportunities only truly come when we start. If you stay trapped in fear or doubt your abilities, success will remain out of reach."
Hoang also expressed deep gratitude to Greenfield School, his home for the past seven years. "I transformed from a student who was hesitant to join activities into a completely different person. I cherish the healthy, supportive environment here—where every student is heard, respected, and empowered to shine."
Nguyen Phan Hoang’s story is a testament to a dynamic Gen Z generation: academically excellent, deeply passionate, and future-oriented. With a solid foundation and a pioneering spirit, he is well-poised to leave his mark on the global semiconductor industry in the years to come.
