Students of 11G1 experience a visit to a Deaf-owned laundry shop

16/09/2024

On the morning of September 17, the students of class 11G1 embarked on an experiential visit to Giat La Sang, a Deaf-owned laundry shop. This activity is part of the Community Project, a subject in which students collaborate with community partners to implement projects throughout the school year. Prior to the visit, on August 29, the students had an initial meeting and discussion with representatives from Giat La Sang at Greenfield School.

Starting as a small business on the banks of the Set River (Hoang Mai, Hanoi) in 2021, after four years of operation, Giat La Sang has expanded to five locations in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Nai. While offering laundry services like many other shops, what sets Giat La Sang apart is that all of its employees are deaf.

At Giat La Sang, our students had the opportunity to learn about the business model and pick up basic knowledge of sign language, including greetings and ways to express emotions with customers. They also experienced a workday at Giat La Sang, ironing clothes, folding garments neatly, and learning how to clean shoes.

Our students were guided by Giat La Sang staff in learning basic sign language for communication.
Our students participated in a hands-on experience cleaning shoes at Giat La Sang.

Recognizing the communication challenges faced by Giat La Sang staff when interacting with customers, our students proposed creative communication strategies to help overcome these difficulties. Some groups created videos explaining basic sign language for customer interactions, while others role-played as employees to showcase a typical workday at the business. Additionally, the students conducted surveys with nearby households to understand the demand for Giat La Sang's services.

Giat La Sang staff eagerly watched the communication videos created by our students.

Through these experiences and real-world surveys, our students gained deeper insights into the challenges faced by Giat La Sang. As a result, they proposed practical and effective communication strategies to help the business reach more customers. Stay tuned for the creative ideas from class 11G1 this semester as they continue their journey with Giat La Sang!
