Beyond rote memorization: How teachers are making Mathematics engaging for students

18/09/2026

Grade 7 students enthusiastically applied their knowledge of direct proportions and rational number multiplication to hands-on baking, sharpening their logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

At Greenfield School Ecopark Campus, mathematics extends far beyond textbook pages and dry formulas. To foster a love for math and encourage real-world application, the school regularly organizes experiential learning activities and applied math projects. These initiatives help students grasp the practical value of mathematics, transforming a intimidating subject into an exciting journey of discovery.

Last week, Grade 7 students in the Global Citizen Bilingual Program participated in a hands-on activity titled "Baking by Recipe." During the session, students explored concepts of direct proportion, rational number multiplication, and calculations involving various units of measurement, such as grams, milliliters, and individual items. By scaling ingredients proportionally, they observed how adjusting one item requires a corresponding change in all others.

Following classroom theory, students headed to the school kitchen for practical application. Tasked with scaling a recipe originally designed for two people up to ten, they utilized their mathematical knowledge to increase batch sizes while maintaining exact proportions. Converting measurement units also reinforced precision and attention to detail.

The tangible outcome of this integration was a batch of delicious, creatively shaped cookies. Beyond mathematical concepts, students practiced teamwork, time management, kitchen safety, and sanitation, while learning to appreciate and share the fruits of their labor with teachers and peers.

Each completed project builds student confidence, reinforcing the practical value of their education. Through experiential learning, mathematics ceases to be a set of rigid formulas and becomes a source of joy that sparks curiosity and exploration.
