“Digital Shield”: Greenfield School Equips Grades 1–3 Students with Digital Self-Regulation Skills

In the digital age, developing self-regulation is one of the most important lessons in helping children stay safe from online risks.
With the aim of helping students in Grades 1–3 learn how to manage themselves and make responsible decisions when using the internet, Greenfield School’s School Psychology Department organized the workshop “Digital Shield” on April 9–10. Through the program, students strengthened their knowledge and skills to recognize and avoid potential risks in the online environment.
The workshop focused on helping students understand both the opportunities and challenges of the digital world while building self-awareness as a foundation for healthy and sustainable online behaviors. During the 70-minute session, school psychologist Phạm Hương Thu guided students through three core digital self-regulation competencies via a series of interactive challenges: “What Time Is It?” (Time Management), “Green – Yellow – Red” (Content Awareness), “Warning Alert” (Interaction Management), and a concluding “Memory Challenge” game that helped students review and reinforce what they had learned.
Each activity served as a practical lesson, encouraging students to listen to their own needs, manage screen time effectively, and recognize safe boundaries in the digital world. The concept of a “shield” was introduced as the ability to filter information and identify factors that may affect emotions and decision-making. Nguyễn Quỳnh Châu (Class 2A2) shared: “I learned how to choose safe content to watch and when I should tell my parents right away if I see something concerning.”

Teaching digital self-regulation from an early age is essential for supporting children's healthy development in an increasingly connected world. Through the workshop, students gained valuable skills to recognize, prevent, and respond to online risks. Greenfield School hopes that parents will continue partnering with the school to help children build a strong inner “digital shield,” making their online experiences both safe and positive.
