“Learning Through Play” in a Morning English Class with 2G1 Students
26/03/2026
At Greenfield School, learning English is not simply about memorizing vocabulary—it is a journey of exploration, experience, and real-world application.
Last week, students from Class 2G1 of the Global Citizen Bilingual Program enjoyed an engaging and energetic English lesson on the topic of “Transportation.”
The lesson embraced the spirit of “learning through play,” allowing knowledge to be absorbed naturally and meaningfully. Applying the Active Learning approach, the classroom was transformed into a miniature transportation ecosystem. Rather than learning through pictures alone, students observed, named, and categorized different vehicle models according to where they operate—on land, in the air, or on water. Language structures such as “I can see…” and the interactive “Traffic Light” game were thoughtfully incorporated into the lesson, helping students develop their English skills while also fostering awareness of traffic rules from an early age.
To create an immersive learning experience, the teacher even dressed up as a traffic police officer, bringing the lesson to life for students.
The lesson’s appeal also came from a variety of activities designed to strengthen critical-thinking skills. Through games such as “Spin the Wheel” and practical scenarios, students were challenged to analyze situations and choose the most suitable means of transportation for different journeys—for example, selecting a plane rather than a bike for long-distance travel. These activities encouraged logical reasoning and helped students learn how to make decisions based on specific contexts.

One of the most meaningful moments of the lesson came when the class watched a short film depicting the challenging journeys that children in remote mountainous areas undertake to get to school. The winding, muddy, and often dangerous roads offered students a broader perspective on the world around them, inspiring empathy, discipline, and a deeper appreciation for educational opportunities.
Through this series of engaging activities, students not only expanded their vocabulary but also strengthened their teamwork, communication, and critical-thinking skills through collaboration with both teachers and classmates.
The lesson concluded with bright smiles and valuable takeaways that extended beyond language learning. Greenfield School believes that when English is taught through creativity, hands-on experiences, and meaningful connections to real life, students are inspired to learn with enthusiasm and gain the confidence to use the language in their everyday lives.
