Wrapping Chung cake, celebrating the Lunar New Year with Greenfield School students

15/01/2025

"Seeing Chung cake is seeing Tet!" In the hearts of every Vietnamese person, the green Chung cake is an indispensable dish, a distinctive symbol of the Lunar New Year. Gathering together to wrap chung cake, watching the pot of chung simmer by the warm fire during the days leading up to Tet, becomes an unforgettable memory cherished by all.

This afternoon, the students of Grade 1 had the opportunity to experience the Tet atmosphere in the most Vietnamese way by making their own chung cakes. The hands-on activity not only gave the students the chance to practice the steps of making Chung cakes but also helped preserve the traditional cultural elements of the Lunar New Year.

The experience of wrapping chung cakes has become an annual activity for the Grade 1 students at the beginning of the year

The fragrant sticky rice, fresh dong leaves, string to tie, mung beans, fatty pork, and wooden molds were all carefully prepared. Under the guidance and support of the Aden chefs, the students eagerly set to work making their own chung cakes. For many of the children, this was their first time wrapping a cake. Although they were a little unsure at first, each of them was excited and eager to complete their own Chung cake.

The cakes, though not perfect, held the effort and perseverance of the little ones. Especially, by learning about the meaning of the green Chung cake, making them, and sharing the joy, the children had meaningful and delightful experiences.
