"Able to withstand earthquakes on a shaking table for 2 minutes"; "at least 30cm tall and capable of bearing a 1kg load"; and "efficient use of materials with aesthetic appeal"— these are the key criteria set for today's Grade 3 STEAM project, "Designing Earthquake-Resistant Houses."
Before starting the project, the students explored the Earth's structure, the causes of earthquakes, and why earthquake occurrences vary across different regions. They were also introduced to famous earthquake-resistant structures worldwide, such as dampers, base isolators, and cross-bracing systems.
The lesson was filled with excitement as students worked together to brainstorm ideas and design their earthquake-resistant house models. With a budget of 50 tokens, each group had to carefully plan their material purchases, selecting items like straws, A4 paper, masking tape, and wire. This activity not only encouraged creativity and the application of learned knowledge but also required teamwork and collaboration among the students.
The most exciting part for the young students was testing the durability of their earthquake-resistant house models. Some teams successfully passed the challenge on their first attempt, while others needed to "reinforce" certain details to perfect their designs. Their determination and problem-solving skills in each test were key factors that helped them continuously learn and innovate.
From theory to practice, the students have come to understand that while earthquakes are an unavoidable natural phenomenon, we can apply science and technology to minimize their impact. Greenfield School hopes that these hands-on experiences will nurture a passion for exploration and inspire confidence in their learning journey ahead.
