  • Admitted to Carleton University (Top 5 comprehensive universities in Canada according to Maclean 2021)
  • IELTS 8.0

Achieving a perfect score in Business for 3 years of High School, possessing an impressive GPA and IELTS score, receiving enthusiastic support from teachers throughout the application process - those are the secrets that helped Nguyen Quang Minh (Grade 12G1, Greenfield School) excellently get accepted to the University of Ottawa (Canada) - the university ranked 137th best university in the world (according to Times Higher Education 2023) and Carleton University - Top 5 comprehensive universities in Canada (according to Maclean 2021). In which, the University of Ottawa also granted him a 30% scholarship (equivalent to nearly 200 million VND) for 4 years of study at the university.

"I shouted very loudly in class and showed it off to my friends. At that time, I was in Mr. Juan's Business class, I opened my email and saw that the school sent a notification that they had made a decision about my application and went to the school's website for more details. I was very nervous and worried, but when I knew I was accepted, I shouted with joy. Then I asked permission from the teacher to go outside to call and show off to my parents" - Quang Minh shared his joy when he received the acceptance letter from the university.

Talking about the reason for choosing Canada as a study destination, Quang Minh said that his father used to be a student studying in Canada, so he has a lot of experience and useful lessons, which helped him orient his study path and improve himself. Besides that, the maple leaf country has a quality education, beautiful nature and living expenses are somewhat cheaper than in European countries or the US.

Quang Minh said that Canada focuses on grade point average (GPA), academic results in the country and requires an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. To achieve his goals, he planned to ensure good academic scores, English proficiency, and standardized exams.

"From 11th grade, I spent time studying English, improving 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing. In November 2022, I participated in the standardized exam and achieved an IELTS score of 8.0, in which Listening and Reading skills reached 8.5, Speaking 8.0 and Writing 7.0. My average academic score for 3 years of grades 10, 11, 12 is 8.7, 9.4, 9.2 respectively" - Quang Minh shared about his roadmap.

Studying hard and doing well, Quang Minh also actively participated in activities. He is the leader of a charity project donating to children and women at the Blue Dragon organization; MC of some programs such as Onrique ClubFair - Greenfield School Clubs Day; won the First Prize in the English debate contest Speak Out!; won a Silver Medal in Archery, Basketball, Athletics at the Greenfield Olympics...

Sharing how to study to achieve many admirable achievements, Quang Minh said: "My way of studying is not too special. I am quite ngại to have to go to extra classes, so I often spend time self-studying by watching videos, self-study tutorial websites and finding questions to review. When I do a test and make a mistake, I feel uncomfortable and want to do it correctly as much as possible.

I always try to maintain discipline and create a clear daily schedule. For example, in 11th grade, when I needed to focus on preparing for the IELTS exam, I was determined to do 4-5 tests/day and spend time playing on weekends. The best way to balance between playing and studying is to understand the importance of why it is necessary to balance. If you lose balance, one of the two things cannot be complete."

Studying at Greenfield School for 6 years, Quang Minh realized that Greenfield School has brought him a positive learning environment. The fact that he was able to study with friends with the same ability and the same aspirations created motivation for him to strive to develop. Besides that, studying Global Citizenship also helped him have valuable experiences.

"There are practical subjects like College Writing or Business that are very helpful for me when I go to university or in my future work. I have achieved a perfect score in Business for all 3 years of study. The teachers have supported me a lot in studying as well as when preparing for study abroad applications, especially Ms. Duong (IELTS Teacher). Although it was only very small corrections when I sent an email to the university, it proved that she paid very close attention to even the smallest details. And who knows, it is those small corrections that I can avoid unfortunate things" - Quang Minh said.

In early July, Quang Minh will leave for Canada to study abroad. He plans to study Finance at the University of Ottawa, partly because his parents are both successful entrepreneurs, partly because he is quite interested in this field. After completing the program, Quang Minh hopes to support his father in expanding his business model or start his own company.

"One door closes, another door opens" (Alexander Graham Bell). Wishing Quang Minh will reap many successes and strongly move forward to soon achieve his dreams.
