Capturing the Essence of Vietnamese Culture in a Literature Lesson Amidst Nature
14/04/2026
With the goal of fostering awareness of preserving the nation’s cultural heritage, a Literature lesson for Class 10G3 transformed into a vibrant cultural exploration space under the theme “Traditional Arts of the Vietnamese People.”
Here, knowledge was transformed into a “mini exhibition,” allowing students to explore four distinctive forms of traditional Vietnamese art firsthand: architecture, stone carving, bronze casting, and sculpture.
The highlight of the lesson was its open-air learning environment set amidst lush greenery. Surrounded by nature, these young “researchers” presented their findings, engaged in discussions, and closely examined the displayed exhibits. Each group showcased thoughtfully prepared artifacts, including a model of the One Pillar Pagoda (Architecture), Buddha statues and sacred creatures (Stone Carving), incense burners and Đông Sơn drum-inspired artworks (Bronze Casting), and a wooden sculpture titled “Smooth Sailing” (Sculpture). Through direct observation and note-taking on learning worksheets, students gained a deeper appreciation of the aesthetic value and historical significance behind each work.
Through these hands-on experiences, students discovered the diversity of traditional Vietnamese art from multiple perspectives. They learned that while Vietnamese architecture reflects the use of natural materials and indigenous lifestyles, bronze casting represents the rich legacy of the Đông Sơn culture. Stone carving showcases stylized artistic thinking and the symbolic nature of religious art, while wood sculpture is closely connected to Eastern philosophy and the spiritual life of local communities. Together, these art forms serve as essential pieces of the cultural mosaic that has shaped Vietnam’s enduring heritage.
Reflecting on the lesson, student Nguyễn Tuệ Linh shared enthusiastically: “I was especially impressed by the real artifacts that each group brought to the exhibition. They gave me the opportunity to learn more deeply about Vietnam’s traditional art forms.” Sharing a similar sentiment, student Đỗ Quỳnh Hoa said: “The careful preparation of the models and presentations helped me discover many meaningful aspects of our cultural heritage and realize how diverse and valuable Vietnamese art truly is.”
The lesson concluded with a rich, multi-sensory learning experience that combined exploration, observation, listening, and critical discussion. More than developing students’ thinking skills, the exhibition fostered a deeper appreciation for and sense of responsibility toward Vietnam’s cultural heritage. Greenfield School believes that learning environments in harmony with nature provide endless inspiration, enabling students to absorb knowledge in a natural and engaging way.
