Driven by code: Pham Chu Minh Khoi secures admissions to 6 U.S. Universities with $600,000+ in scholarships

18/03/2026

Pham Chu Minh Khoi, a Grade 12 student at Greenfield School Ecopark Campus (Cambridge International Pathway), has achieved a remarkable sweep of admissions from six prestigious U.S. universities, totaling over 15 billion VND ($600,000+) in scholarship offers.

Standing out among a competitive pool of global applicants, Khoi - a Grade 12 student at Greenfield School Ecopark Campus (Cambridge International Pathway) - successfully conquered the Computer Science major—a field consistently ranked as one of the most selective at U.S. institutions by U.S. News & World Report.

His impressive list of acceptances includes top-tier public universities and elite liberal arts colleges:

  • Rutgers University – New Brunswick: Ranked #42 National University and #16 Top Public School. As a Big Ten research powerhouse, its 2025 acceptance rate hovered around 35%.
  • Indiana University Bloomington: #73 National University (Big Ten member). Awarded a $52,000 scholarship over four years.

  • Drexel University: #80 National University. Awarded a $148,200 scholarship over four years.

  • University of Illinois Chicago (UIC): #84 National University.

  • Oberlin College: #58 National Liberal Arts College. Awarded a $217,000 scholarship over four years (34% acceptance rate).

  • Juniata College: #92 National Liberal Arts College. Awarded a $191,800 scholarship over four years. Khoi has also been invited to interview for the Global Scholars Award ($8,000) in April 2026.

The Roadmap to the U.S.

Khoi’s fascination with Computer Science began early, characterized by hours spent engrossed in lines of code. However, it wasn't until Grade 11 that he set his sights on the United States, aiming to study at the heart of the world’s technological superpower.

Khoi approached his goal with surgical precision. He took the IELTS in January 2025 followed by the SAT in December 2025. "Because I had a solid foundation, I took the IELTS first to clear the way for the SAT," Khoi explained. "It reduced the pressure and allowed me to focus on the SAT, which is significantly more demanding."

The strategy paid off: Khoi earned an IELTS 7.5 and an SAT score of 1500. Simultaneously, he excelled in his A-Level exams, securing 1 A*, 2 A, and 1 B. Remarkably, he completed the curriculum for three of those four subjects in half the usual time—a feat that added significant "weight" to his application.

Beyond academics, Khoi dedicated substantial time to extracurricular activities and his personal statement. He served as a member of the Greenfield Environment Club, the Finance Lead of the Greenfield Press, and participated in fundraising for the "Medicine Cabinets for Children" project, which supported 48 preschools and primary schools in Khanh Xuan and Huy Giap (Cao Bang province).

For his personal essay, he spent a month brainstorming and refining his draft to showcase his unique character, aiming to convince the Admissions Committees of his fit for their institutions. Through his research, Khoi discovered that U.S. admissions officers highly value essays that utilize metaphors or analogies; consequently, he adopted a similar creative approach in his own writing.

The essay recounts a day when heavy rain stranded his school bus. Khoi decided to run the rest of the way. What seemed like an impossible 5km journey became manageable when he focused only on reaching the next street lamp.

This "lamp post mindset" became his blueprint for tackling complex technology. "Small, precise steps—like lines of code—build complex systems," he reflected. This resilience transformed a rainy commute into a passion for professional marathons and, ultimately, a winning pitch for his suitability for Computer Science.

Pursuing Computer Science

Securing admissions from six U.S. universities has significantly eased the pressure of the upcoming national exams for Khoi. Nevertheless, his daily routine remains largely unchanged. He continues to attend classes diligently, striving for excellence in the forthcoming National High School Graduation Examination. In his spare time, he proactively delves into advanced technology topics to hit the ground running for his studies abroad.

While Khoi is still awaiting results from three other U.S. institutions, his current plan is to enroll at Rutgers University – New Brunswick - a member of the prestigious Big Ten Conference - to major in Computer Science following his high school graduation.

Khoi believes that pursuing a field with such a profound global impact will maximize his ability to contribute to the community in the digital era. The major is also a perfect fit for his personality: a self-taught individual who examines problems from multiple perspectives—introverted, yet decisive.

The 18-year-old student holds high expectations for his university years. He aims to conduct research alongside professors and participate in STEM-related clubs and events. Candidly admitting that communication is not his strongest suit, Khoi hopes these activities will not only provide professional experience but also help him hone his interpersonal and leadership skills.

Reflecting on his eight years at Greenfield School Ecopark Campus, Khoi shared that he most enjoyed the programming knowledge gained in his IT classes. "My success today is deeply rooted in the constant support of the teachers at Greenfield School. They were always patient in answering my questions and never hesitated to spend extra time helping us grasp the lessons more deeply," Khoi remarked.

Drawing from his own journey, Khoi advises aspiring study-abroad candidates to start early, break their goals into manageable milestones, and give their best effort to each part. "If possible, find an experienced mentor for guidance. However, the most important factor is still yourself—knowing what you want and never ceasing to strive for the goals you've set."

Looking further ahead, Khoi dreams of pursuing a Master’s degree in the U.S. and working for global tech giants like Google, Meta, or Microsoft. We wish him continued strength and resilience on the path ahead, carrying the wisdom and character forged at Greenfield School to confidently leave his mark on the world.
