Enhancing teachers’ professional expertise in English language teaching at Greenfield School
15/07/2025
How does an "English-rich environment" impact students? Is learning theory alone enough to help them confidently express themselves in a completely unfamiliar language?
These were some of the key questions passionately discussed by the Primary English Department teachers during their professional development session this morning (July 15, 2025).
With many years of experience teaching English to primary students, Ms. Cao Thi Thu Tra emphasized that English should not be treated as just another academic subject. Rather than teaching simply for exams, the more important goal is to equip students with linguistic ability and academic thinking skills, empowering them to use English in learning other subjects, exploring topics, and engaging with new cultures, ideas, and knowledge.

According to Ms. Thu Tra, to truly immerse students in English and nurture a natural love for the language, teachers need to create an “English-rich environment.” Activities such as reading, group discussions, creative projects, and engaging platforms like storytelling, spelling bees, debates, or movie dubbing provide students with valuable opportunities to be “immersed” in English and grow in both confidence and fluency in an authentic, enjoyable way.
Alongside discussions about fostering a responsive and engaging language environment, teachers also revisited the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach. In collaborative groups, teachers brainstormed cross-curricular activity ideas, enthusiastically planning for the upcoming school year.

This professional development session provided a meaningful platform not only to enhance subject knowledge and teaching techniques, but also to enrich each teacher’s toolbox with creative and effective instructional strategies.
At Greenfield School, we believe that when children learn in a positive, well-crafted environment with passionate and supportive teachers by their side, their love for English will naturally flourish — and learning will become a joyful, inspired journey.
