Exploring the “Vietnamese soul” through a series of experiential activities on Vietnamese culture by Grade 9 students.

Colorful traditional “đèn kéo quân” lanterns, the enticing aroma of traditional Vietnamese cakes, and the graceful “tứ thân” dresses rich in national identity all created an engaging and inspiring learning atmosphere during the Vietnamese Culture thematic series for Grade 9 students at Greenfield School throughout April and May.
Organized by teachers from the Social Studies Department, the series not only offered students opportunities to learn through textbooks but also to directly experience, practice, and explore the beauty of traditional Vietnamese culture through three familiar themes: traditional crafts, Vietnamese cuisine, and traditional costumes. Lessons became more engaging as culture was not only “learned” but also felt through hands-on experiences and inspiring connections.

The journey began with a thematic exploration of Vietnam’s traditional crafts. From rice paintings and “đèn kéo quân” lanterns to familiar woven items such as trays, baskets, and sieves, each classroom became livelier as students worked together to research, develop ideas, and complete their own products. Many students were excited to try, for the first time, tasks requiring patience, meticulousness, and craftsmanship. Lively presentations about traditional craft villages also helped students better understand the cultural value and the importance of preserving Vietnamese handicrafts in modern life.
In the Vietnamese Cuisine module, the excitement continued in the kitchen practice room with signature dishes from three regions such as “bánh đúc,” “bánh bột lọc,” and “bánh xèo.” From preparing ingredients, mixing batter, making fillings to completing the dishes, students actively participated under the guidance of their teachers. Beyond being an enjoyable hands-on activity, this was also an opportunity for students to explore the cultural characteristics of different regions and gain a deeper appreciation for the richness and refinement of Vietnamese cuisine.
The series concluded with an exploration of traditional costumes such as “áo Nhật Bình,” “áo tấc,” and “áo tứ thân.” Through group presentations and research activities, students learned about the origins, symbolic meanings of patterns and colors, and the appropriate occasions for wearing each costume. Their creative presentations and confident delivery brought color and life to the learning space, making cultural values feel more accessible and vivid than ever.
The Vietnamese Culture experiential series not only provided enriching and enjoyable experiences but also helped students better understand, appreciate, and take pride in their national cultural identity. Greenfield School believes that through such meaningful and experience-rich lessons, students will grow to cherish traditional values and actively contribute to preserving and promoting Vietnamese culture in today’s world.
