First graders experience the traditional art of water puppetry

11/03/2025

There are few traditional art forms as captivating for children as puppetry. Not only are the puppets beautifully crafted with vibrant music and lighting, but the performances are also staged based on familiar fables and fairy tales, retold with thrilling, stylized, and mesmerizing twists.

During this morning's visit, study, and experiential program at the Vietnam Puppet Theater, the first graders had the opportunity to enjoy the performance "Andersen's Fairy Tales" presented by talented and experienced artists. The harmonious combination of Eastern and Western cultures, along with both water puppetry and dry puppetry, created a powerful effect that captivated the young audience.

The students eagerly watched the performances of "Andersen's Fairy Tales"

Throughout nearly two hours of performance, the students reunited with familiar characters such as the Ugly Duckling, the beautiful Little Mermaid, and the greedy Sea Witch — all brought to life with fresh and charming designs. Accompanied by stunning lighting effects and modern music, the performance sparked the students' imagination, allowing them to explore the world through an innocent and childlike lens.

Apart from giving students insight into a traditional form of Vietnamese art, the trip also imparted valuable lessons with strong educational messages. The performance of "Andersen's Fairy Tales" served as a reminder of moral values, genuine love, empathy between people, and faith in the goodness of life.

The bright, curious eyes following every puppet movement and the enthusiastic applause as the curtain rose were proof that traditional art still holds a special place in modern society. As long as we cherish our souls and nurture a love for the arts, water puppetry will continue to resonate, flowing endlessly like an undying stream.
