A Journey of Persistence and Strategy

While the dream of studying abroad first sparked in the 6th grade, it wasn’t until the 10th grade that Quang Vinh began crafting a concrete strategy to turn that vision into reality. Reflecting on his journey, Vinh admitted his starting point was relatively modest compared to other top-tier applicants. During middle school and his first year of high school, he recognized a personal limitation: a heavy focus on traditional academics at the expense of holistic development. Seeking a more well-rounded environment, he made the pivotal decision to transfer to Greenfield School in the 11th grade.

In preparing his applications, Vinh took a proactive approach - researching potential host countries, identifying universities that excelled in his fields of interest, and meticulously matching his profile against institutional criteria to target the best possible schools within his reach.

Understanding that academic rigor is a cornerstone for admissions in the U.S., Canada, and Australia, Vinh maintained a consistently high GPA of 9.5. Leveraging the specialized Global Citizen Bilingual Program at Greenfield, which integrates test prep into the core curriculum, he efficiently secured impressive standardized scores of 7.5 IELTS and 1470 SAT.

However, Vinh believed a truly competitive application isn't just about the quantity of activities, but the consistency of the narrative they weave. With a passion for media, he stepped into the role of Head of Communications for the Student Council and various school clubs.

In this leadership capacity, he directly trained and mentored his team in content creation, design, photography, and video production. Under his guidance, these efforts amplified the impact of the Baking and Volunteer Clubs, leading to several successful workshops that raised: over 10 million VND for the Thien Huong Shelter, nearly 60 million VND for Vien Son Primary & Secondary School in Lao Cai, 56.5kg of clothing for Hanoi Pet Adoption.

Beyond his school community, Vinh served as the Deputy Head of Foreign Languages for the non-profit project "WITH: We Inspire Towards Highschool," which assists middle schoolers in entering top-tier high schools in Hanoi. He was also a member of the TEDx Hanoi-Amsterdam Youth communications team. These diverse experiences allowed him to sharpen new skills and leave a lasting impression on international admissions boards.

The Fabric Stall and a Standout Essay

Vinh believes that while academic records and extracurriculars are essential, the defining factor of his success was his personal statement. Though completed in just under a week, the essay offered a profound look at his worldview, seamlessly connecting his daily life to his future aspirations.

His narrative was set against the backdrop of his family’s modest fabric stall at Ninh Hiep Market. "My childhood was filled with colors: rolls of silk stacked like rainbows and the constant rhythm of bargaining voices. For most people here, those colors meant money - every meter of fabric, every deal, every sale. For me, they meant stories", Vinh wrote in his opening paragraph.

In a community where children are often expected to inherit the family business, Vinh yearned to step beyond the pre-determined path. For him, fabric was more than a commodity; it was a metaphor for connection. He realized that behind every purchase lay unique needs and human emotions—a realization that fueled his desire to tell meaningful stories through design.

Vinh chose to avoid the "grandiosity" often found in sample essays. Instead, he focused on the smallest, most familiar details of his daily life, weaving them together with his extracurricular experiences to explain his passion for UX (User Experience) Design.

Reflecting on his journey, Vinh maintains that authenticity is what makes a candidate truly shine. He emphasizes that comparing oneself to predecessors is unnecessary, as everyone has a unique story that can elevate their profile and scholarship chances.

For students dreaming of studying abroad, his advice is twofold: start early to build a profile with genuine depth, and proactively seek the right support to make the process smoother and more effective.

Looking back, Vinh expresses deep gratitude to Greenfield School for providing an environment that fosters individual discovery. "At Greenfield, I found close friends and teachers who went beyond academics to support my application process," Vinh shared. "The Global Citizen Bilingual Program allowed me to balance my studies with my passions. Moving here was undoubtedly the right decision."

As for the future, Vinh is leaning toward the UX Design program at Purdue University, a top-tier public research university in the U.S. For now, he is focusing on his upcoming National High School Graduation Exams while equipping himself with the life skills necessary for an international student.

Congratulations to Quang Vinh on his brilliant achievements! We wish him continued success as he embarks on this exciting new chapter.
