Learning literature the Greenfield School way: Student-led discussions that break all conventional molds

26/12/2025

Recently, in a Literature lesson, Grade 6 students had the opportunity to step into various roles—such as authors, story characters, readers, and critics—to share their perspectives in the literary forum “When the Pages Open…”.

Through this approach, Literature lessons became more engaging and relatable, creating space for students to actively express their thoughts and emotions about the texts.

The literary forum allowed students to step into different roles and share their perspectives on familiar works.

Students were divided into four groups, each presenting for 25–30 minutes on various aspects of texts studied in the Grade 6 Literature curriculum, such as the gentle lessons from the children’s story “Xóm bờ giậu”, images of the Vietnamese countryside in the poetry collection “Góc sân và khoảng trời”, the wisdom and talent of the grandmother in “Người bà tài giỏi vùng Saga”, or the simple happiness conveyed through the literary works.

With a variety of creative formats—combining panel discussions with dramatization, music, and mini exhibitions—students delivered vivid and visually engaging presentations. They confidently took on the roles of authors, characters, critics, and experts to share their thoughts, emotions, and viewpoints, helping the class approach each work in a comprehensive and multi-dimensional way, rather than through a single conventional analytical lens.

With a variety of creative formats, the students delivered presentations that were both visual and engaging.

Beyond deepening students’ understanding of literary meaning, the forum also helped them develop essential skills such as idea building, scriptwriting, teamwork, communication, dramatization, and public speaking. Reflecting on the lesson, Ms. Nguyễn Thị Phương Nhung (Literature teacher) shared:
“The literary forum is a very suitable learning format for Grade 6 students. Through this activity, students are not confined to rigid learning patterns but are encouraged to take ownership of their learning. Despite their young age, they demonstrated strong teamwork, flexibility in completing tasks, and confidence in sharing their ideas. This spirit truly deserves recognition.”

Ms. Phương Nhung also noted that this discussion-based approach helps students enhance their learner autonomy.

Greenfield School believes that through literary forums like this, students not only come to understand that each literary work carries its own stories and deep human values, but also gradually nurture a genuine love for literature through such meaningful learning experiences.
