"Learning through play" in literature class with Grade 6 and 7 students

19/02/2025

The Game-based Learning method not only helps students absorb knowledge naturally but also fosters a love for learning. Through a variety of age-appropriate games, students can freely explore, experience, and solve problems using their boundless imagination in a joyful and engaging learning environment.

During the past week, the Grade 6 and Grade 7 students had an outdoor Literature class with the theme "Reviewing Fairy Tales and Fables through Challenges." Instead of revising in the traditional way, the students participated in a "race" consisting of five stages. Each stage presented a challenge related to a story given by the teacher. After completing each challenge, the groups received a coded clue leading them to puzzle pieces hidden around the schoolyard.

The final picture was assembled by the students after decoding the challenges.

After listening to the teachers explain the rules, the student groups enthusiastically entered the competition. For Grade 6, the students reviewed their knowledge of fairy tales through the story The Charcoal-Selling Princess, gaining a deeper understanding of the characteristics and meanings of fairy tales. Meanwhile, in Grade 7, the questions were based on the story The White Horse’s Wings, helping students reinforce their knowledge of fables and draw meaningful lessons for themselves.

The questions closely followed the lesson content, allowing students to review and expand their knowledge in an engaging and enjoyable way.

Each stage of the race not only provided valuable knowledge but also helped students develop their thinking skills and teamwork through exciting code-breaking challenges. The moments of tension while answering lesson-related questions, the thrill of decoding clues to find hidden puzzle pieces, the cheers when discovering them, and the creative role-playing – all contributed to a dynamic and energetic Literature class.

The students worked together to decode challenges at each stage to find the puzzle pieces hidden around the schoolyard.

Discussing the advantages and challenges of incorporating "Learning Through Play" into teaching, Ms. Nguyen Thuy (Literature Teacher) shared: "The biggest advantage I see when applying this method is that it encourages creativity, increases engagement, strengthens teamwork skills, and supports knowledge review. However, when organizing lessons outside the classroom, teachers need to design suitable games and carefully plan every detail, from timing to student management, to ensure an effective lesson."
