“Nguyen Du – The echo of heartbreak”: An ancient heritage reimagined by the youth
17/04/2026
Offering a fresh and distinctive perspective, Grade 11 students recently launched the project “Nguyen Du – The Echo of Heartbreak” (Nguyễn Du – Tiếng đoạn trường) to share their reflections on the profound humanistic and artistic values of The Tale of Kieu.
For over two centuries, Great Poet Nguyen Du’s The Tale of Kieu has remained the "shining pearl" of Vietnamese literature, transcending the tides of time to touch hearts across generations. At the Greenfield School Ecopark Campus, this classic masterpiece served as the inspiration for a special project titled “Nguyen Du – The Echo of Heartbreak,” spearheaded by Grade 11 students.
The project was the result of two weeks of intensive work. Moving beyond standard textbook lessons and classroom lectures, the students took the initiative to delve deeper into the work, expressing their insights through diverse and creative mediums.
The students produced documentaries on the life of Nguyen Du and the genesis of The Tale of Kieu; adapted and staged iconic chapters; and recreated the traditional folk practice of “Kieu Fortune-telling” (Bói Kiều). These activities not only showcased the students' creativity but also breathed new life into the classic curriculum.
Though only a few minutes long, the student documentaries reflected a serious commitment to research, scriptwriting, and art direction. With thorough preparation and confident narration, the students skillfully guided the audience through the turbulent life of Nguyen Du and the journey behind the creation of Vietnam’s literary pinnacle.
Perhaps the most indelible impression was left by the emotional theatrical performances. From the humor of “Hoan Thu’s Jealousy” (11A4) to the poignant reflections of “The Vow” (11A2) and “The Exchange of Vows” (11A3), each class brought a unique flavor to the stage. Through every gaze, gesture, and line of dialogue, the students truly brought The Tale of Kieu off the page, living and breathing the complex depths of the characters.
Finally, the project highlighted “Kieu Fortune-telling”—a cultural practice steeped in Vietnamese spiritual and philosophical values for two centuries. By designing their own unique sets of divination lots and playing the role of interpreters, the students explored life philosophies through poetry alongside their teachers and peers. Each lot cast served as a poetic message, prompting participants to reflect on their own hopes and the mysteries of life. This activity stands as a testament that cultural heritage, regardless of the era, remains anchored and appreciated through evolving forms.
Reflecting on the journey, Ms. Huong Thom, Head of the High School Literature Department, shared: “The most significant outcome of this project isn't just the final products, but the empathy and profound respect these young students have developed for a masterpiece of world heritage. When students research and express themselves firsthand, literature reaches its most meaningful state: educating humanity and awakening national pride.”
