Nurturing students’ love for the homeland’s seas and islands

13/03/2025

With the desire to raise awareness about the historical traditions and maritime sovereignty of Vietnam, as well as to educate students about their responsibility in protecting the nation’s sovereignty over its seas and islands, the “Homeland Islands and Seas” competition - Season 2, an interdisciplinary project between History and Geography for 8th graders, has officially returned.

At the competition, 13 classes were divided into 4 groups, each consisting of 2 to 3 classes with teams of 5 to 6 students. Each team was named after a Vietnamese island, archipelago, or bay and took part in three exciting competition rounds: Setting Sail, Riding the Waves, and Docking.

Round 1 - Setting Sail: Kicking off the competition was the impressive “introduction” performance from each team. In just 3 minutes, the students showcased their creativity through diverse presentations, vividly portraying the geographical features, natural landscape, economy, and sovereign significance of places such as Ha Long Bay, Con Dao, Hoang Sa, Son Tra, and more.

With diverse presentation styles, the teams delivered highly creative introductions.

Round 2 - Riding the Waves: Featuring 10 multiple-choice questions with 15 seconds to think for each, this round required strong memory and a solid grasp of Vietnam’s maritime and island knowledge. The students demonstrated their quick thinking and excellent teamwork, consistently giving accurate answers and creating thrilling competition with every question.

The students demonstrated confidence and solid knowledge with each question.

Round 3 - Docking: Entering the final round with determination, the teams took turns uncovering letters on a board containing 11 horizontal keywords and 1 vertical keyword with a central theme. Their seamless coordination and sharp thinking helped them reveal each word, getting closer to the correct answer and victory. Impressively, many teams were able to find the central keyword after just 2 or 3 horizontal clues were revealed.

Many teams quickly found the central keyword after just 2–3 questions.

Throughout the competition, the vibrant and determined atmosphere was palpable. There were moments of joy when correct answers were given, as well as moments of regret when the results didn’t meet expectations. Nonetheless, the students maintained their spirit, coordinated smoothly, and gave their best effort in every round.

More than just a knowledge playground, the “Homeland Islands and Seas” competition was also a journey to nurture love for the homeland and foster a sense of responsibility to protect the sacred sovereignty of the nation’s seas and islands. Hopefully, after today’s competition, the students have gained valuable experiences, useful knowledge, and a deeper sense of pride and appreciation for every inch of the country’s land and sea.
