Sneaking into the delicious kitchen of our Grade 1 Junior Chefs

06/04/2026

With the aim of fostering independence and nurturing gratitude for family meals, Grade 1 students from the Cambridge International and Bilingual programs recently took part in the “International Junior Chef” experience.

This interdisciplinary program combines five learning areas: Science, Natural & Social Studies, Arts, Experiential Learning, and Personal Development Skills (PDS).

At the event, students transformed into junior chefs and experienced every step of preparing a meal—from planning a menu and selecting fresh ingredients to cleaning and preparing food. Their small hands learned how to wear aprons properly, follow hygiene rules, and sanitize their hands before cooking.

The Greenfield School kitchen became a lively learning space where students could engage in hands-on culinary experiences.

Under the guidance of their teachers, the young chefs confidently carried out simple cooking tasks such as chopping vegetables for Russian salad, adding sauce to spaghetti, stir-frying beef macaroni, and squeezing fresh lemons and oranges for juice. Before long, the delicious aromas of pasta sauce, freshly cooked noodles, and fruit filled the room.

The lesson not only helped students develop basic cooking skills but also encouraged them to appreciate the effort that goes into preparing family meals.

Experiencing cooking for the first time, Le Cat Khanh An (1C2) shared excitedly: “Cooking is really fun, but it also requires careful attention. My favorite part was adding sauce to the spaghetti and decorating the plate with my friends.” Meanwhile, Do Minh Bao (1G2) reflected: “Today, after making food myself, I realized how much effort my parents put into cooking for me every day. When I get home, I want to help my mom set the table and clean up after meals.”

With their teachers’ support, students prepared and completed simple dishes on their own.

Ms. Ha Phuong, Head of Grade 1, shared: “The biggest challenge in designing this activity was ensuring absolute safety when using kitchen tools while also creating a menu that was both age-appropriate and engaging enough to encourage hands-on participation. However, every effort was worthwhile when we saw students not only learning how to cook but also supporting one another and gaining a deeper appreciation for the hard work of adults through each dish they prepared.”

By the end of the lesson, Grade 1 students had gained valuable cooking skills and enjoyed tasting the delicious dishes they had created themselves. Greenfield School believes that gratitude, kindness, and responsibility are essential qualities that will help students grow into confident and capable global citizens in the future.
