“Grow up with Bucky” Workshop - Overcoming barriers to deliver sex education
25/03/2023
Sex education is important for children's growth, however many parents are shy to talk about it. Since there are not many means of support, parents don't know how to educate their children to understand properly. Realizing these difficulties, the Psychology Department of Greenfield School organized a gender sharing workshop "When I grow up - Grow up with Bucky" for students in grades 6, 7, and 8.
"Mom, how was I born?", "Why are there abnormal changes in my body?".... These must be common questions during puberty that most parents receive from their kids but don’t know how to answer properly. In order to promptly support parents as well as provide necessary knowledge for their children, Greenfield School's Psychology Department organized a knowledge sharing workshop on gender - "Grow up with Bucky" for students in Grades 6,7,8.
An exciting and delightful atmosphere was maintained throughout the session. Especially teachers created a sense of security for children to openly share their concerns. During puberty, the more obvious physical and psychological changes are, the stronger a child's curiosity to discover themselves becomes.
Students are comfortable and listen attentively to the sharing from the teacher
With simple explanations and reliable scientific knowledge, the teachers "untangled" the most asked questions from students such as: How is our body formed? What are the body changes during puberty? How are male and female bodies different from each other? What to do when the body starts to change?
The knowledge is illustrated with intuitive images and easy to understand
Beside the development in biology, the psychological changes of the children also need to be cared for properly. In the debate of "Should students be in love from a young age?" students had opportunities to give different opinions on school-age love. From the Support side, they think that loving at students' age motivates them to study harder. On the other side, the Oppose team believes that they are not mature enough to be aware of their own future consequences.
Interesting debate with convincing arguments of the students
Greenfield School believes that the sharing session is a premise to help students gain appropriate understanding about the body changes during puberty, thereby equipping self-defense skills, handling dangerous situations, and building a healthy and active lifestyle. At the same time, the school and parents will have good solutions to protect the safety of their children in an optimal and comprehensive way.
